Dear Diary

Today we found the caterpillars at the bottom of the jar they have spun more silk and one has climbed to the top already. They have grown more and more than Monday the 15th and there is a lot of Poo in the pot. Some people are wondering why they are spinning so much. When will they make their chrysalis? Even though they are very cool to look at we are not allowed to take the lid of or touch them, because opening the lid will give them too much Bacteria.

Dear Diary

Today one of the caterpillars was hanging up-side-down. They are beginning to get bigger and move around much more. Did you know that if the temperature gets too cold the caterpillars will take longer to grow?  They should grow in three to five weeks.

Dear Diary

We are going to tell you about health and safety for caterpillars.  Keep the caterpillar pot upright, away from the sunlight and keep the lid on. Don’t disturb the caterpillars unless no movement then check them. If a web is spun it is a good sign. Today the caterpillars look happy and are crawling around lots.

Dear diary

Today a package arrived in Red Class.  No-one knew what was in it and we just couldn’t bear the tension, so just before playtime our teacher opened the box and inside the box there were little, baby caterpillars! How exciting!  We now have 5 little caterpillars creeping and crawling in their little jar, sitting in the corner of our classroom. They are going to turn into painted lady butterflies someday. In a few weeks they will go into their cocoons and then butterflies.

Red Class Hillier Trip

WILLEM THORNLEY 8

On Tuesday 2nd of June 2015, Red class and I went on an embarking adventure to Hillier garden centre in Romsey.

When we got there I was expecting a very awesome day and our guide Carla made that happen

We played a game called the decaying game where a group collect 20 leaves and there were cards in the trees. Each one said something and you had to try to lose all your leaves. My group ended up with 3

Next we did a bug each group was given a few nets and we each had a little pot. We took it in turns to sweep our nets through the long grass in an attempt to catch some bugs. I caught a spider with a green backside and two beetles.

After that we walked on a wooden pathway through some leaves from South America. Leaves may not sound too interesting but they were about 2 meters tall and each one was just one leaf on one stem.

Now Carla showed us the compost bin, all of the apple cores and the pears were rotting away to soil.

The last thing we did was learn how plants give air for animas and animals give food for plants.

Finally it was time to go I had a great time thanks to Carla.

On Tuesday 2nd June 2015 Red class from Durley Primary School went to Hilliers Gardens in Romsey for an epic school trip we learnt so much it was awesome at the end everyone wanted to do it again.

The first activity we did was collecting 20 leaves everyone was confused so everyone ran off eagerly collecting their chosen amount. At first there wasn’t that much of a variety, but as we saw different types of leaves which made it more interesting. Each group now had a excellent variety of colours and types of leaves. After all the collecting  was done we played a game about decay and rotting. We learnt a lot about the rotting of leaves.

The next activity ,which was my favourite, was the bug hunt. In the bug hunt each group were given nets, jars and a booklet containing  some insects. We had to wave nets through the meadow it wasn’t the bug finding that was hard it was getting them into the jars. The hardest bugs to catch were the flying ,jumping and crawling ones. In the end I caught 4 insects 2 aphids ,1 black fly and an orange and black beetle. During the activity we learnt about the insects  who lived in the meadow.

As time flew past, we had an exciting walk through south American leaves they were so wide. We walked on logs through the leaves. The reason the leaves can grow in the uk is they come from up the mountains , cold and windy like England.

Abigail Fawcett, age 9

On Tuesday 2nd June 2015, Red class (Durley Primary School) on a school trip to Hilliers Garden in Romsey .We learned lots! J

My favourite part was when my group had these massive purple nets, we were given an activity to catch as many bugs as we could, then we named them. I caught two bugs; I caught a Black fly and a stem Green Cricket. Unfortunately I let them go at the end.

I also enjoyed when my whole class went on a long walk though these massive leaves. I learnt that the leaves often grow in South America, and when I touched the stem I got pricked by the spikes.

The day couldn’t have been any better , most of  the class liked the bridge .But I preferred the big leaves , we were going to go pond dipping , but we decided not to because we had a pond at school.

I loved it! I recommend that whoever’s reading this blog goes to Hilliers Garden centre. It’s so fun!!    By Abigail Fawcett!

On Tuesday 2nd  of June

I went with my friends in red class to Hilliers gardens center. We had to collect 20 leaves and go and hunt down lots of blue cards hanging in the trees and on each card there was something that eats the leaves so we had to put them in a bag to rot.

I really liked doing the bug hunt we all caught lots of bugs I caught lots of aphids. Aphids are bugs that are green they are very very small bugs but they can die easily. I also found a black spider with a bright yellow back, I did not know what it was so I let it go .

I also liked looking at the fish in the pond they were brown and red. There were lots of lily pads and they looked like floating raps and pancakes in the pond of fish.

On Tuesday the 2nd of June red class and I went to Hilliers gardens in Romsey. We mat two people one was called Carla and one was called Wendy.

My favourite thing was when we walked through the big, spiky leaves on a big, long tree that got blown down by a strong wind and we were walking on it but it was cut in half. I couldn’t believe that I was walking on it. My other favourite thing was the bouncy, bouncy, bouncy bridge. It was very, and I mean very bouncy.

I also found out that there were 1200 different types of plants. I felt like I was in a world of plants with plants everywhere. The place was filled with plants.

It was very very disgusting because Carla opened a compost lid and banana skins were in it and apples and stuff like that were in it. We got to look inside it was disgusting. Carla got a banana skin out from in it. But then we looked inside the other one with soil in it.

IT WAS THE BEST SCHOOL TRIP EVER !!!

Emma Burton, 8

On Tuesday 2nd of June 2015, Red Class from Durley Primary School C of E, went to Hilliers garden center for a school trip.

My favourite part was bunny and going on the bouncy bouncy bridge. We had loads of fun. The bunny game is where there is 1 team of bunnies and 1 group of lettuce. We learned how the rabbits got oxygen and the plant got carbon dioxide. The bouncy bridge was all shaky. It was bouncy and I felt I was on a cloud but most of all I liked standing under the South American leaves. There were spikes underneath like a rose and dinosaur like skin on top. The horse tales were green and fury but the stem is light brown and dark brown. We walked through bamboo and out in to the fresh air. We had a net and did a sweep over the long grass. We found out what the bugs were and let them free again. WE played match the leaves. Match the leaves were where we found 20 leaves and matched them correctly to their plant.

We played rotting the leaves. That is where you collected 20 leaves and found a question. If it has something like a caterpillar eats one leaf you put a leaf in the bag. The person with the fewest leaves won. I was in the group that came first. We had only one leaf left.

I hope you enjoyed my blog. It was the best trip ever. Thank you for reading, goodbye.

Marwell Zoo trip

Yesterday ( 20.3.14) we, Green class, went to Marwell Zoo. It was magnificent. First we saw the penguins. They are so fast at swimming. One penguin came up to us. The Tapirs and Capybara are amazing. The Tapirs have noses that are like the trunk of an elephant! We also saw a Flamingo’s egg.

After a walk, we were very lucky, the Cheetah came to see us. We were lucky with the rest of the big cats because we saw them all, the Leopards, Tigers and Snow Leopards.

When we had looked at most of the animals, we went to do an adaptation workshop. We saw Tiger, a Leopard Gecko and Colin a hissing Cockcroach. We saw dead animals and skin from big cats. Then we saw the last of the animals.

Marwell Zoo was amazing.
